Analyzing the crime picture of 2021 and the previous few years, DMP officials say that the crime rate is higher in the areas of the capital where low income and floating people live. There are many reasons for this. But the big reasons are poverty and crime.
Meanwhile, in 2021, theft, robbery and dacoity as the reasons for the reduction of police officers are increasing the job opportunities of the people. DMP Mirpur Division Commissioner ASM Mahatab Uddin told Prothom Alo that many people lost their jobs in 2020 due to Corona. This increased the crime. Now everything is slowly returning to normal. People are getting jobs. This has reduced crime.
The number of cases has increased by 4.6
DMP divides 50 police stations into 8 crime divisions to control crime in the capital. The divisions are Ramna, Lalbagh, Wari, Motijheel, Tejgaon, Mirpur, Gulshan and Uttara. Some of the top terrorists from abroad run these groups and commit various crimes including extortion.
'In almost 100 per cent of the cases, we take the case. Probably a factor as to why they're doing so poorly. "

There are more low income people living there. Women and children from poor families go out and do various jobs to support their families. They are tortured in many ways. Incidents of domestic violence are also seen more in these areas.
The Motijheel division of the DMP has registered a maximum of 72 cases of child abuse last year.
Smuggling around the airport
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport falls within the DMP's Uttara division. There are more cases of smuggling in this department. Police say domestic and foreign smugglers use the airport as a smuggling route. For example, last April, Dhaka Customs arrested Jhantu Chandra Barman, an employee of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, with gold worth Tk 60 lakh. A case was filed at the airport police station over the incident. Such cases are constantly happening in the police station.

Racing has been greatly reduced by lawsuits against several vehicles. When the road was empty at night, many people would drive recklessly. It caused accidents
Abul Hasan, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gulshan Police Station
More road accidents in Gulshan
Manoranjan Hajong, father of police sergeant Mahua Hajong, was seriously injured in a collision with a private car on December 2. Manoranjan Hajong's motorcycle was hit from behind by a reckless speeding private car at Uterne, the chairman's house on Airport Road in the capital.
According to the DMP, there were 69 road accidents in Gulshan division in 2021, which is the highest among Dhaka. Police say the main reason for the high number of road accidents in Gulshan is the competition with expensive cars in the middle of the night. In the competition called 'Drug Race', these vehicles ran on Gulshan, Banani and Airport roads with loud noises.
Gulshan police have identified 25 vehicles that entered the competition in the Gulshan area at night. The owners of these vehicles have also been warned. Gulshan Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Hasan told Prothom Alo that racing has been reduced to a large extent due to lawsuits filed against several vehicles. When the road was empty at night, many people would drive recklessly. It caused accidents.
Cows are also stolen in the capital
The police divided the crime into 14 categories. One of them stole a cow. A significant number of cattle thefts occur across the country every year. However, DMP statistics show that there are cattle thieves in the capital as well.
According to the DMP, four cows were stolen in the capital last year. The previous number was six. In 2021, two cows were stolen in Mirpur. One cow theft incident took place in Gulshan and Tejgaon divisions. But police say these are isolated incidents.
The reasons for the difference in crime
Touhidul Haque Khan, an assistant professor at the Institute of Social Welfare and Research at Dhaka University, was asked why crime is high in low-income and marginalized areas. He told Prothom Alo that crime varies from region to region due to the biography of the people and the source of their employment, their relationship with each other, their culture and their humanity. "Relationship-oriented crime is more prevalent in areas where floating people live," he said. By relationship-centered crime we mean crime and drugs centered on one another's monogamy, quarrels, fights, family quarrels, friendships. '
Many analysts point to the causes of crime as lack of justice, socio-economic inequality, inefficiency, and the failure of the police. They think that the criminals are caught repeatedly and go to jail. Due to the weakness of the case, investigation and judicial process, they came out and got involved in crime again. And in Dhaka there is more opportunity to get involved in crime easily.
Muhammad Umar Farooq, a professor in the Department of Criminology and Police Science at Maulana Bhasani University , told Prothom Alo that the law enforcement agencies have to be prepared by identifying the types of crimes that are more prevalent in an area.
