13 rupees rent 20 rupees collection, anarchy is going on

The bus fare from the technical junction of Mirpur to Science Lab in the capital is fixed by the government at Tk 13 per passenger. Buses from Mirpur and Savar pick up passengers from the technical junction. Dishari, Bahan, Transilva, Savar and Moumita Paribahan are charged 20 rupees for this distance.

This anarchy in bus fares in the capital is not stopping. 5 to 15 rupees more than the rent fixed by the government is being collected. Most buses are charging 15 to 20 rupees instead of the minimum fare of 10 rupees fixed by the government. If anyone wants to pay less, the driver and his assistant are abused.

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) launched a campaign on November 10 to enforce bus fares. Thousands of buses were fined in a month-long operation. More than 50 buses were sent for dumping. The BRTA has written to the Regional Transport Committee headed by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner to cancel the route permits of the buses of the companies which have been fined more than once but have not been repaired. This initiative did not stop the collection of additional rent.

Khandaker Enayet Ullah, general secretary of the Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association, an association of bus owners, said it had been decided to send a warning letter to those who were charging higher fares before revoking their route permits.

The number of buses plying from Mirpur No. 10, Mirpur Road Technical Junction, Shyamoli, Science Lab, Nilkhet, Farmgate and Shahbag to various destinations was seen on 18 and 19 February and last Wednesday. It is seen that most of the buses are charging extra fare. The minimum fare for almost all buses except BRTC buses is 15 to 20 rupees.

Despite repeated assurances from the government, the extra bus fare has not stopped. Those responsible for the failure to stop anarchy also need to be brought under the law.

Dishari is seen getting on a transport bus, hanging a fare list. The rent from the technical to the science lab is 13 rupees. 20 rupees is being taken. The bus driver's assistant said. Abdullah said, 'We are helpless. You have to take the rent that the owners are fixing. '

In view of the increase in diesel price by Tk 15 per liter, the government increased bus fares by 26 percent on November 8. The Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association announced on November 10 that seating and gatelock services would be closed in Dhaka within three days. But so far it has not stopped. In the name of 'seating service', from Mirpur section 10 to Karwan Bazar to the press club, instead of the government fixed fare of Tk 22, all buses are charged Tk 30. The fare from Kalyanpur to Magbazar is Tk 14, while Lovely and Labbike transport costs Tk 25.

BRTA chairman Nur Mohammad Majumder said those who are evil do not listen. They are still renting extra. However, after the campaign, the collection of additional rent has decreased a lot.

There are also differences in bus fares for different transport routes to the same destination in the capital. The fare fixed by the government from Shyamoli to Karwan Bazar is 11 rupees. Basumati Paribahan, which operates on this route, charges Rs 25, Tanjil Paribahan Rs 20 and Labbike, Lovely and Gabtali Minibus Owners Association (Local No. 6) buses charge Rs 15.

Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, secretary general of Bangladesh Jatrikalyan Samiti, said that despite repeated assurances from the government, the collection of extra fare on buses has not stopped. Those responsible for the failure to stop anarchy also need to be brought under the law.
