Ekushey February has been celebrated as National Martyrs' Day since independence. Its significance was further enhanced after UNESCO recognized Ekushey February as an international mother tongue in 1999. Ekushey February is now being celebrated as International Language Day in almost all countries of the world.
From 1952 to 2022. The language movement has passed 70 years. It is our pride as well as our introspection. We need to think deeply about what we have done and what we have not been able to do in the development of our mother tongue during this long period. Language development is through the spread of education. However, in the last five decades after independence, a large part of the population has been deprived of access to education.
Rabindranath Tagore said, "If any education is to be made permanent, if it is to be deepened, if it is to be made extensive, it has to be dissolved in the ever-familiar mother tongue." But we have not yet been able to make mother tongue the vehicle of education at all levels. There are no books in Bengali on many subjects of higher education including engineering and medicine. Dr. The recommendation of the Kudrat-e-Khuda Education Commission to introduce one-way education at the primary level has not been implemented till date due to the negligence of the policy makers.
Every year Ekushey February is celebrated and commemorated by organizing various events. But to what extent have we been able to establish the status of the mother tongue for which young people have given their lives? Dignity of language means its circulation in all spheres of state and public life. As soon as the 21st of February came, the policy makers of the government talked about the introduction of Bangla language at all levels, but in reality no effective and sustainable steps were taken. But when the day is over, they forget. Although Bengali is still used in government work, English is gaining prominence in various fields including business and commerce, higher education and research. Laws are being made in Bengal, But the High Court still relies heavily on English. Several years ago, the High Court set up a committee to bring order in the use of Bangla language, but it has not made any progress. We are concerned that the use of mother tongue in the day to day affairs of state and social life is also declining. The nameplates of most installations are written in English. In a country where people have given their lives for language, this neglect of mother tongue is very sad.
If we truly respect the language martyrs, then we should not limit Ekushey February to formalities only, we have to realize its meaning. It is necessary to ensure the introduction of Bangla language in all levels of the state including education, government and non-government departments. The government should not only think about the development of Bengali language; We also have to work for the development of the language of other people living in Bangladesh. The real education of Ekushey February is the improvement of mother tongue.
