What police members can and cannot do on social media

The police headquarters has discouraged members from exchanging any important and confidential official information via e-mail. A policeman has also been discouraged from using more than two SIMs on a mobile phone at the same time without special permission.

Police headquarters issued a directive on February 10 for members to use social media and digital devices. Failure to comply with these guidelines would be considered as misconduct and incompetence, it said.

In case of non-compliance with the instructions, action will be taken against the members in accordance with the departmental and, if necessary, customary law. This instruction has been sent to all the units of the police.
The directive said that the image of the force could be tarnished if the police personnel did not use social media and various digital devices with professionalism. In such a situation, there is a need for clear guidelines for police members regarding the use of social media and digital devices.

The guidelines on mobile phones and emails say that the use of more than two SIMs on mobile phones is being discouraged at the same time. Besides, SIM must be registered in one's own name. You have to buy SIM in accordance with the prevailing laws and guidelines of the country. New SIMs with the same number or different numbers can be purchased by making the lost or damaged SIMs unusable and invalid. If the SIM allotted for the force is lost or damaged, a new SIM of the same number must be retrieved. Official e-mail should be used for sending official information regarding e-mail. E-mail is discouraged from sharing any important or confidential official information.

When using personal e-mail, the necessary security measures need to be carefully checked and selected.

Kamruzzaman Prothom Alo, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG-Media) at the police headquarters, said that as a disciplined force, members have been instructed on how to use social media and digital devices. Its purpose is to ensure the proper use of social media and digital devices.

Police members have been asked to be careful in choosing content and friends through social media. In particular, criminal or organized criminal gangs have been asked to be avoided. Police members must maintain decency in sharing personal photos and videos. Every police officer should be aware against spreading any kind of rumor, lies or provocative information.

When using search engines on the Internet, it is not possible to find anything unpleasant or access a banned site (especially through the use of official digital tools).

The directive further states that nothing can be done through social media in such a way as to tarnish the image of the state, government or forces. No post contrary to national unity and consciousness can be given. Religious sentiments should not be offended or acts contrary to secularism should not be allowed. No comments or content related to political ideology, militancy or religious extremism may be uploaded. No rumors or misleading posts can be made against the liberation war or the spirit of liberation war or the father of the nation and his family. No sexually explicit or controversial content may be uploaded. Writing, audio or video of any subject which may cause dissatisfaction or unpleasant attitude in public mind may not be published. Photographs and postings may not be taken with identified, habitual offenders or persons participating in any such controversial activity.
