Recommendation to increase the price of milk in an attempt to control the market

The government reiterated its decision to reduce value added tax (VAT) and tariffs on daily commodities including edible oil and sugar. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) may issue a notification in this regard on Monday. In addition, the government will form a task force in the next couple of days so that unscrupulous traders do not take any chances by increasing the prices of daily necessities.

These decisions were taken at an inter-ministerial meeting at the secretariat of the capital on Sunday. Meanwhile, a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives yesterday recommended raising the price of liquid milk (Milk Vita) of the Bangladesh Dairy Cooperative Union. If the price of milk is increased, the cost of people will increase further.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi

The inter-ministerial meeting was chaired by Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and attended by Agriculture Minister Abdur Razzak, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury and State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid. Apart from Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam, secretaries of several ministries, Inspector General of Police and representatives of various law enforcement agencies also took part in it.

The meeting was organized in view of the simultaneous rise in prices of daily commodities in the country. Earlier on Thursday, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal had said that VAT and tariffs on daily commodities were being reduced.

After the meeting, the Home Minister said, “I see the price of edible oil rising every day in the world. Its effect has also come to our country. We sat down keeping in mind that the price of other things may also go up in Roger. ' "Oil and gas supplies are declining in some places due to the Russia-Ukraine war," he said. Wheat supplies came from Russia and Ukraine, where we could have problems, prices could go up. Meetings have been held on how to control it or keep it at a tolerable level.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi told reporters, "The decision on VAT has been positive. Hopefully, I can take a step by Monday (today). ' He added, “Some traders are trying to take advantage of the rising oil prices in the international market. As a result, the price has been fixed after talking with everyone. We will not allow stockpiling anywhere, we will not allow any opportunity to be taken. It has been decided that we will intervene wherever this illegal hoarding is attempted.

However, the Commerce Minister had earlier written to the National Board of Revenue to reduce tariffs and VAT on edible oil and sugar. It was not taken into account. According to traders, VAT on soybean oil stands at Tk 28-30 per liter. Edible oil prices have risen for two years. As import prices rise, so does the government's revenue from oil.

Meanwhile, the regulatory duty on unrefined sugar was reduced from 30 per cent to 10 per cent last October. There is still a fixed duty of Rs 3,000 per tonne on sugar, 15 per cent VAT, 20 per cent regulatory duty and 5 per cent advance tax.

TCB

After the meeting, the Home Minister and Commerce Minister said that the sale of rice flour would be increased under the Open Market Sales Program (OMS) to increase the sale of affordable products through the government body Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).

The meeting was informed that the transport cost has increased by 23 percent in the case of transporting milk from the primary association to the chilling center.

Last November, the price of diesel was increased by Tk 15 per liter to Tk 60, citing the reason for the increase in prices in the world market.
