The style of teaching has changed, the students are happy

Arranged classroom. The students are waiting for the teacher. After a while the teacher came. At first he instructed the students to sit in such a way that they could be divided into several groups. Seating is arranged in such a way that group work is easy. There were 14 students physically present in the class then. Then 26 more students were added online.

Students are learning hand-to-hand in the new curriculum. For example, in the last class, the students were allowed to do whatever they could in songs, poems, stories, drawings about the nature of winter. It can be seen that some people have explained the nature of winter by drawing pictures. The students are also learning quite happily.

This was the picture of the class taken according to the new curriculum in the sixth class of Government Laboratory High School located in Dhanmondi of the capital around 12:30 last Thursday. Ashrujit Roy was taking a class on 'Digital Technology'. He was teaching to identify technical problems and how to solve them.

The reporter was sitting in the back row of the students with the permission of the teacher. As a journalist of Prothom Alo , Ashrujit Roy then asked the students, how can the report of Prothom Alo be viewed online at this moment? The students replied that the report can be read by searching on Google. He then called a student and asked him to publish Prothom Alo 's report online. The student then typed 'Prothom Alo' in Google English and the Prothom Alo website appeared on the big screen in the classroom.

Senior teacher of the school Ashrujit Roy said that according to the new curriculum, students are being taught hand-to-hand in a way that their experience will be useful throughout their life.

Not only this school, the new curriculum is being implemented experimentally in the sixth grade in 62 secondary level educational institutions of the country. This activity started on 22nd February. Students are happy with the new method of teaching. Teachers also say that the method is good. But before it can be fully introduced, all the teachers concerned have to be trained and made efficient.

According to the action plan of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB), the new curriculum for pre-primary to higher secondary level will be fully introduced in different classes in phases from next year. In the first, second, sixth and seventh class in 2023; New curriculum will be introduced in 2024 in 3rd, 4th, 8th and 9th class and in 2025 in 5th and 10th class. The deadline for launching new curriculum has been fixed in 2026 for the eleventh class of higher secondary and in 2026 for the twelfth class. In this new curriculum, the student assessment and examination system is changing radically. There will be more continuous assessment (learning) in the educational institution than in the examination.

What's in the new book

In the new curriculum, there will be 10 books on 10 subjects including 6th grade. These are Bengali, English, Mathematics, Life and Livelihood, Science, Social Sciences, Digital Technology, Physical and Mental Health and Protection, Religious Education (according to one's religion) and Art and Culture. Now 12 to 14 books are taught in 6th to 10th class. And in the new curriculum, eight subjects have been fixed for teaching from first to fifth class. These are Bengali, English, Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences, Religious Education, Physical and Mental Health and Protection, Art and Culture. However, students will not get books for all subjects. Some books will be taught in the light of 'Teacher's Guide'.

Those who are involved in curriculum development are the ones who have written the sixth grade books this time. According to the NCTB, due to lack of time, it was not possible to compile sixth grade books on the basis of content throughout the year. For this, books have been prepared on the basis of first four months syllabus and they have been distributed among the students of 72 educational institutions. The rest will be given in two more parts (four consecutive months). The new books emphasize practical education.

For so long in the sixth grade, Ananda Path (Bangla fast reading), Bangla Grammar and Nirman and Charu Path were the main subjects taught in Bangla. There will be a book in Bengali in the new curriculum. The name of the book is 'Bangla'. The book is written keeping in mind that the students learn to communicate well in standard Bengali language. Some strategies and tasks have also been added so that the students can improve their language skills on their own.

In the Bengali book written for four months, Roknuzzaman Khan's rhyme 'Chithi Bili', known as 'Dadabhai' has been added to mean 'I speak in standard language'. Mamtajuddin Ahmed's happy man drama is in the 'I understand' section . In the section 'Write about experience', a short section of ' Nayachin ' written by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been added.

In the 'Understanding Poetry' section is the poem 'Amar Bari' by the village poet Jasimuddin. Excerpts from the days of Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam in the book are used to teach diary writing . Shamsur Rahman's poem 'Pandashram' has been used to teach to work knowingly. Humayun Ahmed's 'puppet' story has been used to teach discussion.

In the sixth grade, work and life-oriented education was taught for so many days. Now, in a new book called 'Life and Livelihood', there is a lot to teach about hand-to-hand writing. For example, in the 'Happiness in the midst of work' section of this book, there are various practical things to be taught, starting from waking up in the morning to tidying up one's bed. These are to be taught through various exercises.

Happy students

The new curriculum, which started experimentally in the sixth grade, is not being implemented for all students. For example, 60 students of Government Laboratory High School in the capital have been brought under the new curriculum. 11 teachers of the school have been given subject based training for launching new curriculum.

Not all sixth graders were vaccinated against coronavirus because they were less than 12 years old. So the students who have been vaccinated are the ones who are taking physical classes. Classes are being held by connecting the rest online. Physical and online পাঠ teaching is being done in this mixed system.

Student Rahat Ahmed said, 'We are taught more now than ever before. There is a lot new in the new class. '

Another student, Fahim Aldin, said that they are also taught what problems they face in their daily work at home and how to solve them.

60 sixth grade students of Binodpur Ramkumar High School in Munshiganj Sadar Upazila have been brought under the new curriculum. Visiting the school at 12:15 pm on Thursday, it was seen that class activities were going on with 49 students. Art and culture classes were going on then.

Teacher Sajal Sutradhar said he had been teaching fine arts, society and science to sixth grade students for eight years. He used to advise students to memorize in class. Students are learning hand-to-hand in the new curriculum. For example, in the last class, the students were allowed to do whatever they could in songs, poems, stories, drawings about the nature of winter. It can be seen that some people have explained the nature of winter by drawing pictures. The students are also learning quite happily.

Siddheswari Girls' High School is among the 72 educational institutions on the list of new curriculum experimental launches. But the school has not yet started the new curriculum properly. A teacher, who did not want to be named, said it was difficult to implement the new curriculum without bringing all the students to physical schools.

However, NCTB member (curriculum) Professor. Mashiuzzaman told Prothom Alo that the information they are getting from all over the country shows that the students of all the schools are happy with the new teaching method.

The complexity of the primary is not cut

There are still some complications with the introduction of new curricula at the primary level. First of all, according to the new curriculum, the link between primary and secondary has not been finalized yet. In the meantime, the new curriculum experiment has started in Madhyami.

The primary education administration says some of the content taught in the new curriculum is not appropriate for primary school age. Again, the budget for the preparation of books for the experimental introduction in the first class has not been approved so far. The book writers' committee and the work plan have not been approved by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education. As a result, questions have arisen among NCTB officials as to whether it would be right to call the new curriculum an integrated curriculum from primary to higher secondary.

Officials at the secondary education administration also say that if the new curriculum is not implemented as planned for the primary, the complexity will increase. Because, if the students are not taught in a new way at the lower level, it will be difficult to coordinate if the medium is suddenly introduced. For this, they have suggested to solve the problems now.

Professor AKM Reazul Hasan, a member of NCTB (Primary Curriculum) , told Prothom Alo that the budget, book writers' committee and work plan for the preparation of textbooks have not been approved yet. Even if it is approved by March 10, it can be done after Eid-ul-Fitr to start the ancillary work.

Teachers need to be created

In the new curriculum, a student will study science, humanities or business, it will be right to go to higher secondary. All students up to 10th class will be taught 10 identical subjects. No public examination was held before 10th class. There will be two public examinations in high school. Although there is a debate about the division going to the eleventh grade instead of the ninth grade.

According to the new curriculum, students will be assessed through various co-curricular activities including project based learning activities, assignment based work, group work (group work), quiz, sports, poster exhibition.

Ashrujit Roy, a senior teacher at Government Laboratory High School, one of the teachers involved in the experimental implementation of the new curriculum, told Prothom Alo that if the new curriculum is implemented, everyone will benefit. Just as they have been given a five-day training to be started experimentally, all the teachers of the relevant subject will have to be trained with adequate training before implementing the new curriculum from next year.
